Jacob Sakil will be joining the Inspirational YOU ‘Young and winning’ panel on Tuesday 18th February at The College of Haringey and Enfield in North End London.
Jacob was elected as Young Mayor of Lewisham in 2009/10 through a local borough wide election prior to that he was a young advisor. Jacob is 20 years old, lives in New Cross where he attended Lewisham College achieving a two year diploma in business studies. As Young Mayor he initiated an enterprise programme for young people in Lewisham to help them get started in business as well as being involved in intergenerational projects.
Having represented young people at conferences and events in the UK as well as across Europe Jacob has been invited to appear on News night, Panorama, BBC News also as keynote speaker at conferences in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Italy. Jacob talks about social issues of interest and concern to young people and the importance of young people’s democratic engagement which often highlights the need for participation in decision making locally and national.
As a motivational speaker and mentor he supports younger people to develop the skills and experience to speak in public and represent their views to various organisations and decision makers.
Within the last few months he started his own business American Bites catering for events, trading at markets with an aim of establishing his own chain of youth friendly restaurants. With this new venture he is also interested in developing partnerships and trading opportunities locally. He is keen to develop networks of budding and established entrepreneurs to help support other young people get into business.
Recently Jacob has been selected to be a youth panel member for the race for opportunity board where he intends to improve how corporations engage and recruit BAME young people.
