Former footballer Clarke Carlisle is supporting a scheme to give black youths the opportunity to study a university degree which can lead to employment within the sports industry.
The former PFA chairman has described the partnership between Wembley Stadium-based university UCFB and The Reach Society as ‘formidable’ and, along with Kick it Out chair Lord Ouseley, has thrown his backing behind the scholarship worth £27,000.
The UCFB Reach Society Scholarship Programme, will provide significant financial support to two students from the Afro-Caribbean community, one male and one female, annually until 2018.
“The partnership between UCFB and the Reach Society is a formidable thing,” said Carlisle.
“The Reach Society are really reaching out, hence the name, into the inner-city communities to give young men and women hope, inspiration and hopefully – with this collaboration now – there’s opportunity with that as well.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to come and get an education in a phenomenal institution and get yourself on that ladder.”
The scholarship was launched on April 10 at the Reach Society’s third Careers Conference and applications must be submitted by Monday August 11.
At the event, Myles Ball, a third year UCFB undergraduate, shared the benefits he gained from his three years of study with UCFB and his plans after graduation.
Successful applicants will attend UCFB Wembley at the national stadium, where lecture theatres, seminar rooms, quiet study areas, library and media suites all overlook the stadium’s hallowed turf.
