We are delighted to announce that applications to LSE’s Black Achievement Conference on Saturday 19 October 2013 are now open!|

The Black Achievement Conference is a free one-day event for African-Caribbean students in Years 10, 11 and 12, and their parents and carers.  The conference will be taking place on Saturday 19 October 2013 from 10am – 4pm at LSE.

Hosted by presenter and entertainer Kat B from MTV and including a line-up of speakers from London’s African-Caribbean community, the conference is designed to help students and their families to plan for their future by providing a taste of higher education. The event will inspire students to aim higher, think bigger, realise their potential and make informed decisions about what to do with their futures and will include:

  •                       Motivational sessions
  •                       Parent workshops with practical tips on supporting their child’s education
  •                       Student life workshops led by LSE’s African Caribbean Society
  • A free lunch!

Who should apply?

The Black Achievement Conference is open to high achieving (have achieved, or are predicted to achieve, A* – B grades at GCSE) London state school pupils from African and Caribbean backgrounds in years 10, 11 and 12 who meet one of the following criteria:

  •                       Eligible for Free School Meals
  •                       Is a Looked After Child
  •                       Has a disability

Or two of the following criteria::

  •                       Has no parental history of Higher Education/university
  •                       Living in an area of low progression to university
  •                       Parents from lower socio-economic categories

Preference will also be given to pupils who

  •                       Attend a school performing below the national average
  •                       Attend a school with above an average percentage of students eligible for Free School Meals

The deadline for applications is Wednesday 9 October 2013.
