Luke Shore – Young and Winning on Wednesday 2nd July at The Nottingham Contemporary
Luke Shore is a seventeen year old democracy activist and a Board Member of the Organising Bureau of European School Student Unions (OBESSU), a platform which unites 24 national school student unions from 19 European countries. OBESSU is the official representative of school students at the European level and as a Board Member, Luke is responsible for representing their interests in political negotiations with the European Union, the Council of Europe and the United Nations.
He takes a lead in running OBESSU’s regular international conferences, which bring together national unions, civil society organisations and policy makers from over 20 countries to discuss European education policy. He also trains student activists around Europe in how to organise in schools and build unions, having recently assisted work in Bulgaria, Croatia and Czech Republic.
Before being elected to his position at OBESSU, Luke led a national campaign for the creation of a UK school student union and re-founded the organisation StudentVoice. He chaired the School Student Working Group, which lobbied the Department for Education for more democracy in schools, and in 2011 was part of the global coordination teams of the Occupy movement. He occasionally works as a freelance writer and consultant.
